The best leadership style in the eastern international management role is democratic leadership. It is a form of leadership that allows the managers to encourage other team players to contribute to the decision-making process (Juneja, 2020). The contribution comes in the form of ideas and information related to the decision to be made. The final decision lies with the leader, which directly impacts the control that the leader has on the operations and activities of the business. The democratic leadership style allows the leaders to make the most informed decision about an issue and thus be adopted for Eastern International management roles.
In the east, the power distance is greater, and most employees feel a disconnect between them and the leadership. The majority of people don’t feel like they have a say in the workplace, which organizations should change. It is also notable that the levels of collectivism in the east are much higher than individualism. Hofstede shows that the culture in the east has a lot more collectivism towards doing different things. It is an indicator that the use of the democratic style of leadership could be highly effective. I recommend the application of a democratic style of leadership for management positions as there are the correct incentives to make it work effectively.
It is critical always to consider the long-term orientation found in many of the eastern countries. There is a significant focus on delivering management and policies that have a long-term view, which can directly impact the development of the companies. Culture in the east tends to focus on taking less risk and having long-term effectiveness as a means of survival, and these traits can go well with the idea of having a democratic style of management (Murcahyanto et al., 2018). Allowing employees to have some say in the governance process could go a long way in helping with the company’s development and increasing the accuracy of decisions.
Japan is one of the world’s largest economies, and its economy is primarily integrated with the economies of Western countries. There are many companies with operations in Japan and western countries, and thus it is a top market for expatriates to live and work. The democratic leadership style could work effectively in the country as the cultural aspects I explained could work just as effectively. The Japanese culture is mainly hieratical across many ways. It is a factor that directly makes it hard for many of the employees to have a say in the operations of any one company.
In Japan, there is a culture geared towards taking a lesser risk and avoiding uncertainty. The process is effective in helping increase the longevity of businesses as they do not take too many risks, and they can remain profitable over a long time. The culture also has an immense power distance as those at the top are expected to make all the decisions while the others are expected to follow whatever is said (Bonsu, & Twum-Danso, 2018). The process directly impacts the quality of management, which could be improved through better democratic leadership.
Japan is also home to some of the world’s largest multinationals, such as Toyota and Mitsubishi. These companies have great experience in democratic leadership in many other markets, among them the United States. Therefore, they can easily transfer the leadership style to the Japanese homeland. It could help increase the ability of managers to relate with other employees and make accurate decisions as they are offered much more information. The benefits of adopting democratic leadership in japan are many, and managers could benefit significantly from the collectivism found in the Japanese culture.
