“Computers have developed at a quicker pace than virtually any other technology on the globe during the past half-century, yet the principles on which they operate have largely stayed consistent. Students will study how computer systems operate “”under the hood”” in this class.

The goal of this course is for students to have a fundamental knowledge of the principles that underpin computer systems. The introduction of operating system concepts and computer network protocols is a major emphasis of this course. This expertise is required for the development of safe software, high-performance software, and network-based services and applications.

CONTENT WITH INDICATIVE VALUE

The operating system’s function
Hierarchy of memory (caches, virtual memory, and working sets)
Handling, procedures, and scheduling are all disrupted.
Organize your files
Multiprocessors and synchronization: an introduction
An overview of network protocols (OSI model)
Client-server application development
Cryptographic protocols and computer system security
Learning outcomes that are expected

Students should be able to do the following after completing this subject:

The ability to solve issues, including the gathering and evaluating of data; the ability to think critically and independently; and the ability to reflect.

I was an international student taking a three-year Bachelor's program (2013-2016). I dropped out during my second year... (2015) due to mental health issues. I was open about ‘not being okay’; however did not receive expected support from my tutors or the university admins. I reached out to the university’s psychologist for help and visited more often than I attended classes! Thankfully appointments were free… (or was it included in my tuition fee?). However, the psychologist prescribed me generic anti-depressant pills and was not interested in my wellbeing. With the rising number of international students enrolled and the increase in tuition fees every year, no wonder I felt like a number and not a human. I wish I had better care and guidance back then. Hopefully, the university takes mental health issues seriously now. My ‘University of Melbourne’ experience was unpleasant, and I was left with trauma and anxiety. I hope those lining up with me at the psychologist's office are now okay.read more
